COVID-19 showed us that nearshoring from Latin America makes more sense than ever

The crisis caused by COVID-19 showed us that countries like India and the Philippines do not have a good infrastructure and most people do not have internet at home. According to data collected by the National Sample Survey as a part of the Survey on Education (2014), only 27% of households in India have some members with access to the internet. Access to the Internet does not necessarily mean that a household actually has internet at home. In fact, only half of the households (47%) that have any access to the internet own a computing device (including a smartphone).

Only 27% of households in India have some members with access to the internet.

Therefore, companies that have contracted offshore outsourcing services with India or the Philippines must be suffering from part of the well-known offshore problems such as:

Communication is very complicated with people living in a time zone so different from ours and we all know that communication is key for high-quality, cost, and time-efficient software.

Language barriers and cultural differences can end up raising costs.

Now it is added that the remote offshore teams have to stay at home due to the lockdown caused by the pandemic and the telecommunications infrastructure is not prepared to face this crisis, which concludes by raising the costs of the project in which they are participating.

Nearshore from Latin America

On the opposite side, Latin America has a modern communication infrastructure comparable to that of the US, for example in Argentina, the country where I live, 82.9% of urban households have Internet access. Therefore, during the lockdown, 100% of the teams continue working without interruptions from home. In particular, we at easytechgreen have part of our team working remotely, so we were not affected in our way of work.

This added to the advantages known of Nearshore like the same work culture, the same time zone and without language barriers make a project executed by a team located in Latin America end up reducing the cost of the project compared to one executed by a team on the other side of the world.
